He has a hard chamber and can take his patients to “dives” up to 3 atmospheres.
HBO is another in the class of oxygen/oxidation therapies. It is not oxidation, per se as is ozone or ultraviolet blood irradiation. It is OXYGENATION. Availability of oxygen is the single most important factor in all of healing and maintaining health. HBO works by you going into a pressurized chamber and breathing 100% oxygen. The pressurization permits oxygen gas to actually dissolve into your body’s fluids, which then might be able to deliver healing oxygen to places where red blood cells cannot get to, because of compromised or damaged circulation.
HBO has many approved indications. These include:
- Air or gas embolism
- Gas gangrene
- Crush injury
- Compartment syndrome
- Acute peripheral ischemias
- Decompression sickness
- Enhanced healing in selected problem wounds [like diabetic wounds].
- Exceptional blood loss anemia
- Necrotizing soft tissue infections
- Osteomyelitis
- Delayed radiation injury (soft tissue and bony necrosis)
- Compromised skin grafts and flaps
- Carbon monoxide poisoning
It is not likely your conventional physician will think of, or consider, hyperbaric oxygen. Insurance will not pay for it except in the above conditions. But if you read the above carefully, and extrapolate, you might wonder why HBO is not widely and frequently used for most medical conditions. You see that it is used for compromised tissue and for wounds and “certain” infection like osteomyelitis. Infection is a place where inflammation is high, oxygen is low, and your white blood cells are starving for oxygen to fight the “good fight”. But conventional medicine has limited HBO use to just necrotizing infections and osteomyelitis. It makes no sense to so limit its use in infection to just these when infection of most any kind requires oxygen to mount an ideal defense.
One place I’ve seen stunning results with HBO is after an ischemic stroke. I had a man who lost the left half of his visual field from an ophthalmic stroke 11 days before I saw him. He was told his visual impairment would be permanent. In just a few days of HBO and ozone therapy, he regained nearly all the lost vision. Why? Because in a stroke, there is a small area (umbra) of cell death. These cells are finished. But there is a much larger area of injury (penumbra). These cells can be salvaged if they can get oxygen in time. So, time is of the essence in stroke.
About a year ago, we saw a case of a flesh-eating bacteria on the finger of an anesthesiologist (from a scuba diving cut). Antibiotics alone were clearly not holding the growing infection. This doctor was open minded and jumped right into ozone therapy and HBO. When these services were provided, the wound stopped expanding, and within a few weeks, totally closed and healed. Many people with this treated conventionally will lose a limb or life.
