Once we passed that 5 mile mark, the trail meant business, as we finally hit the base of the mountain and started a more rapid and challenging ascent upwards. Needless to say, the hike was tough, and the 4+ mile trek down Moriah and up Carter was a huge part of that challenge. The way we hiked up, we missed the rocky, steep slide, which is a shame, because I like a good challenge, but the steps up certainly weren’t easy. Anyway, I went back and completed this peak about a week after my first try, making it my final 4000 footer. 3/24/20: COVID-19 Update I also hiked this peak with my friend, and we had a good time. I hear that that route is pretty difficult and fun. The Flume Slide trail is a fraud. The summit of Galehead was nice, as I slapped the rock cairn in the little cove of trees to make it official, but the most amazing part for me were the views from the Galehead hut. The summit of Washington seems endlessly far away, separated from Madison by 7 miles of rocky ups and downs, but is incredibly rewarding to achieve for any traversers. To climb up, one has to grab onto trees, hand holds and wedge their feet into little nooks and crannies. While short, this portion of the hike did give me some technical challenge, so I’m a fan of that. It is time to “dial it back” and use common sense for the common good. 3 were single-mountain hikes, one was during the Presidential Traverse, and the last time was up the Cog Railway with my family. The mist was so thick that anything outside our circle may as well not exist. The Presidential Traverse is a one-way trek over every major mountain in the Presidential range, usually done North-South. Everybody always hypes up this trail as one of the hardest in the White Mountains, and while it was certainly difficult, and we had to be meticulous about our footing, I wouldn’t call this trail super tough. The creation of "the list" provided a reason for hikers to explore new areas, and in turn lessen the concentrated use of the aforementioned areas. Looking Northeast, I could see Mount Madison peaking 3.3 miles away, and Washington rising 2.5 to the Southwest. Approach it from Osceola from the south, and you’ll get a slightly longer, but gentler trek. To make the way down a little easier, you can opt to take the Rocky Branch trail, if you don’t mind crossing rivers and slogging through mud. Let me be clear: This is a subjective list. The slide down the south peak is pretty cool, though. I would go as far as to say that it’s the toughest individual mountain of the 48, if you value elevation gain, exposure and general difficulty over length. Some people love it. For those of you who don’t know, the state of NH has 48 peaks that all rise to or above 4,000 feet above sea level. All criteria is determined by the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC). After this walk, the trail steepens, but is never unmanageable, at its worst turning into an elongated series of steep steps. In the morning, I hiked Mount Carrigain with my mom, so as we pulled up to the trailhead at 5:30 PM, I already had 10.6 miles of hiking and 3500 feet of elevation gain on my legs. I tackled Galehead and the Twins on day 5 of my journey, having purchased my new trailrunning shoes the evening before.
